In 1954, the first ever in Azerbaijan and one of the first in the world, an experimental aquaculture farm was set up in the Neftchala district. Its location was selected specifically to match the historical sturgeon spawning grounds (upriver migration from the sea) in the estuary of Kura River on the west coast of the Caspian Sea.
